SACRAMENTAL DEPARTMENTCasey Hanley – Sacramental Coordinator 632-2678 ext. 233 Sacramental Life Sacraments are visible signs or symbols of God’s saving love for us. Every person, every action has the potential for being a sign, a symbol and a “sacrament”. Each of us is called to be a sacrament of Jesus’ love and healing. The seven Sacraments that we celebrate as Roman Catholics are grouped together under the following headings: initiation, healing and service. These “sacred signs” share the dimensions of past, present, and future. The Initiation Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) celebrate and introduce us to the experience of the Christian life. Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick (Healing Sacraments) celebrate and reveal to us God’s power to heal us in soul and body. The Service Sacraments of Marriage and Ordination celebrate the Christian vocation of service and consecration as minister within our own family and within the wider Church community. The celebration of the Sacraments are truly grace filled moments not only in the life of the child/youth preparing to celebrate the sacrament but also for their families as well as the faith community of SS Peter & Paul. Reflective of our Parish sacramental policy and the Diocesan guidelines, along with the curriculum for Sacramental preparation, several aspects become the foundation upon which a child/youth may be considered a candidate. Initially, readiness, not chronological age, or school grade will determine a child’s preparedness to encounter Christ in a sacramental celebration. The candidate needs to possess an awareness of, and maturity toward, their faith and how it connects with their daily life. A willingness to participate in the immediate preparation process is necessary. In light of this statement, children need to exhibit an integration of faith and life, namely to pray aloud without assistance, the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be, the Act of Contrition and the Nicene Creed (Eucharist/Confirmation). The candidate must possess an awareness of the person of Jesus and regularly attend Sunday Mass. Children/youth preparing for Reconciliation/Eucharist are encouraged to participate in Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the Sunday 9:30 am mass. Sacrament of Reconciliation The sacrament of Reconciliation is grounded in the very essence of Christ’s mission. Christ was sent by God to establish a new covenant: a relationship of everlasting mercy.
