SS. PETER AND PAUL PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We are a faith community of Roman Catholics who are united in Christ. Our lives are based on faith, hope and charity, guided by the Holy Spirit and sustained by the sacraments.
Our mission is to help all people achieve salvation by spreading the message of God's love. We strive to strengthen this effort by enriching ourselves through the Scriptures and the Sacraments. We share our faith by teaching, personal witness and works of charity.
SACRAMENTAL LIFE Sacraments are visible signs of God's saving love for us. Every person, and every action has the potential for being a sign, a symbol and a "sacrament". Each of us is called to be a sacrament of Jesus' love and healing.
The Sacraments that we celebrate as Roman Catholics are Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Sacraments of Healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, and Sacraments of Service: Matrimony and Holy Orders. Each of these are expressions of God's saving action in our lives.
Faith-filled celebration of the sacraments is the means of salvation and holiness for us as individuals and as members of the church community.
- SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: This sacrament of initiation incorporates us into the Church and we are reborn as daughters and sons of God.
Infant Baptism: Parents are asked to contact the parish office before the birth of their child. This will facilitate making arrangements for attending the required pre-baptismal program. This program is on held the second Friday of every month. Baptisms may take place by prior arrangement, either during the third Sunday of each month 11:30 am Sunday Eucharist Liturgy or on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at 12:50 p.m. Please note that our parish does not baptize children during the Lenten Season (from Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil Mass). Sponsors must be practicing Catholics and have a letter of recommendation from their own pastor.
Adult Baptism: Adult baptism may occur only after completion of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.), which is, explained in another section of this website.
- SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION: This sacrament of initiation helps us to focus on the missionary dimensions of the baptismal commitment. Through this sacrament we receive the fullness of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
High School: Confirmation is conferred once a year, after a period of preparation. Sponsor participation is required. See the Religious Education / Faith Formation Handbook for more information.
Adult: Depending on their level of Catechesis, adults may receive the sacrament of confirmation only after participation in the adult Christian initiation process (R.C.I.A.) or in a number of preparation sessions.
- SACRAMENT OF EUCHARIST: The Eucharist is the preeminent sacrament from which all others receive meaning. In the Eucharist, Christ is most profoundly present in the church where we gather to hear the Word of God and to share the nourishment of Christ's body with one another. The times for daily and weekend celebrations of the Eucharistic liturgy are listed elsewhere in this website and in the weekly bulletin.
First Eucharist: First Eucharist is generally celebrated in the third grade at SS Peter & Paul Faith Community. Parental participation is required.
Eucharist to the Homebound: The Eucharist can be brought to people who are home-bound by a parish priest, deacon or a Extrraordinary Minister of Communion by prior arrangement. Pease inform the parish office if anyone in the family is unable to participate in the Eucharistic liturgy for an extended period of time.
Communion Services: Communion services are conducted on a weekly or monthly basis at several area nursing homes and assisted living residences by our Deacons, Pastoral Associate or trained Ministers of the Eucharist. Preaching a homily is optional. Ministers are assigned to a particular residence and scheduled for monthly participation.
- SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: A sacrament of spiritual healing, the Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Confession) offers the gift of forgiveness for the sinful ways in our life. Through our acceptance of that forgiveness, we become reconciled with God and with our church community. The sacrament if offered every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. or upon request or appointment. Parishioners of all ages are encouraged to attend Communal Reconciliation services, which are celebrated during Advent and Lent with several priests present for confession.
First Reconciliation: First Reconciliation at SS. Peter & Paul generally takes place in the second grade. Parental participation is required.
- ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Originally know as Extreme Unction, this sacrament celebrates the gift of God's healing to those who are physically, emotionally or spiritually unwell. No one who is chronically ill or anticipating surgery should postpone receiving this sacrament. It is offered to the homebound by calling the Parish Office and on any Friday afternoon immediately after the 12:05 p.m. mass to anyone requesting it before Mass.
- SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Register in the parish and worship with us for at least six months before making arrangements. Then contact Mr. Robert Grinewich (ext. 320) immediately upon decision to marry (at least 9 months prior to the anticipated wedding). Marriage preparation includes a pastoral prenuptial investigation, completion of an approved marriage preparation program as well as planning the wedding liturgy. Those previously married are not able to marry in the Catholic Church without a Declaration of Nullity or Annulment Decree from a diocesan tribunal. No weding dates can be set unless all of the above requirements have been completed.
- SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS: This sacrament of vocation celebrates the call to serve God's kingdom as one who oversees the guides the Catholic Faith community in the role of the bishop, priest or deacon. Those discerning this call to serve are invited to speak with our pastor or deacons. Deacons may be married or single men and may officiate at baptisms, funerals and weddings outside of mass. Our faith community prays continually for those who are discerning a call to vocations.
About Religious Life... Though not celebrated as a sacrament, life as a religious sister or brother is a call to a life of service, prayer and community. We are happy to talk with anyone moving through the process of discernment regarding the religious life.
- RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the Church's way of assisting individuals through their conversion to Catholic Christianity or to full initiation into the Catholic Church. The process includes attendance at Sunday liturgy, instruction in the teachings of the Church, participation in liturgical rites, reflection of the Scriptures, prayer and faith sharing.
Adults who have never been baptized, those individuals who were baptized Catholic as infants but have had little or no instruction in the faith and those baptized in other Christian traditions are all possible candidates for the RCIA process. Adults must attend Sunday liturgy each week followed by a weekly evening session. Movement through the process is marked by rituals, which celebrate the person's progress along their journey of faith. The length of time required to complete the process varies for each individual, but is usually a minimum of one year.
The R.C.I.A. process is facilitated by the Parish Pastorial Associate and parishioners serving as a support team. Team members may function in one or more roles with those entering upon this journey of faith: dismissal catechist, sponsor, prayer leader or core team member. Each of these ministries performs specific tasks within a spirit of community and are supported by the parish faith community.
LITURGICAL MINISTRIES
- MINISTER OF THE WORD: Lectors are selected to proclaim the scripture readings and to lead the congregation in response. Any confirmed member of the parish may volunteer for training as a lector. Two evenings of training are held annually. There is no minimum term for lectors. They are assigned to a particular mass time for a period of three months and are responsible for getting their own replacements from the lector list if they cannot meet an assigned commitment.
- EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers) assist the priest in the distribution of Holy Communion during the celebration of the Mass. Ministers may also bring the Eucharist to our parishioners who are homebound. Interested applicants must meet the following Diocesan guidelines: "mature Catholics respected in the Parish community who are noted for their devotion to the Eucharist and their service to the parish". Accepted applicants are required to compete a short course of study and may meet annually for a Day of Reflection.
Like the lectors, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers are assigned to a particular mass for a period of three months and are responsible for getting their own substitutes from a published list. Individuals may commit to more frequent participation such as daily mass, if they choose. Some ministers devote their ministry to visitation of homebound parishioners. Others limit their participation to substituting for scheduled ministers who are unable to minister on their regularly assigned days. The flexibility of this ministry allows all who desire to participate.
- USHER AND GREETER: The Ushers of SS Peter & Paul Faith Community assist in seating of parishioners and visitors at our Sunday Liturgies. Ushers select people to carry up the gifts, receive the collections at Mass and distribute the Parish Bulletin at the close of Mass. The Ministry of Usher or Greeter is open to all Confirmed youth and adults in the parish. Scheduling is flexible and is the responsibility of the Head Usher at each mass.
Greeters stand near each door of the church vestibule to welcome parishioners and visitors. They point out the locations of restrooms, the crying room and various written materials. Adults and youth of all ages may act as greeters.
- ALTAR SERVERS: Altar servers assist at the altar during the celebration of the Mass and during other liturgical functions. Volunteers are accepted from students who have celebrated their First Eucharist. Training must be completed to participate in this ministry. Altar servers are scheduled for participation at an assigned Mass through the Parish Office. There is no limit to the length of time one may participate in this ministry. Our adult servers who are available mornings may also assist at the altar for parish funerals.
- MINISTERS OF MUSIC: Saints Peter & Paul enjoys a lively and comprehensive music ministry. We encourage full and active participation from the assembly by providing effective musical leadership. We are members of the American Guild of Organists, the National Association of Pastoral Musicians Guild. These organizations provide our musicians with ongoing musical and spiritual growth. Our choirs and instrumentalists participate in concerts here during the year and join in diocesan events. We welcome new members at any time. Cantors lead sung prayer at most of our liturgies. These are people with good vocal and leadership skills. The Adult Choir includes people of high school age and older. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the church and this choir usually sings at 9:30 a.m. Sunday mass as well as major celebration of the liturgical year.
Youth Ensemble: is a group of junior and high school singers and instrumentalists who perform throughout the summer and on various occasions during the school year. Children's Choir is made up of pupils in grades 3-8. There are two rehearsals available each week and they sing at the monthly Family Liturgy as well as many parish celebrations throughout the school year.
- LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN: Liturgy of the Work for Children is a ministry devoted to the children who attend the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. After the Opening Prayer, the children are called forth and invited to listen to the Word of God proclaimed at a level they can understand. They are dismissed to the Neumann Center rooms under the church where the readings are proclaimed. Rather than listen to a homily, they reflect on and discuss the meaning of God's Word for their lives. Our parish volunteers also incorporate music and other activities into the program. Upon completion of the Liturgy of the Word, the children re-join their parents in the assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Volunteers to this ministry are accepted from Junior High age on up. Volunteers are asked to lead the proclamation and sharing of the Word about once a month. Those individuals interested but unable to participate monthly are welcome to help whenever they can.
- NOVENAS: SS Peter & Paul Parish offers two novenas for our parish; one in the Spring and one in the Fall. The Spring novena is in honor of St Anthony of Padua and St. Jude Thaddeus. The novena takes place within the 12:05 p.m. Mass on Tuesdays sometime between March and June. Since the exact dates vary from year to year, notice of the novena is listed in the parish bulletin.
In the Fall the novena is in honor of Our Lady, St. Therese of Lisieux and St. John Neumann. This novena takes place within the 12:05 p.m. Mass for nine consecutive Tuesdays. Notice of this novena is also listed in the parish bulletin.
- EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Adoration of the Eucharist is offered on the First Friday of each month except during July and August. Participants are asked to sign up for half hour periods in a notebook in the church vestibule.

- PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM
The mission of the catechetical faith formation process seeks to provide adults, youth and children with knowledge, experiences and skills necessary to become faithful, fruitful disciples of Jesus Christ. In keeping with their age, it is our hope that they will assume responsibility as vital members of the parish faith community and be able to participate in the Church's mission to proclaim, celebrate and serve the coming of God's reign.
Our goal is to provide a rich catechetical experience that offers, enhances and challenges participants to have a personal relationship with the Lord and to become his disciples. In doing so, we help them believe that Jesus is the Son of God and educate and instruct them in this life, thus building up the Body of Christ.
The Diocesan Religion Curriculum contains clear expectations for religious education achievement standards as well as specific doctrine relating to each standard. Specific areas cover the topics of prayer, sacraments, scripture, moral issues, doctrine, peace and justice, Christian values, church history and community service. Our Religious Education / Faith Formation Program is structured to assist parents in their primary roles as educators of their children through their own work and example. Active participation by parents is vital since it lays the foundation for reinforcement in the classroom. Regular active participation at Sunday Mass supports, enhances and nourished the young community of believers by Word and Sacrament.
Candidates for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation or Eucharist are required to actively participate in preparation for the sacrament. Parents and sponsors are directly involved with their youth's preparation. Parents meetings and a pre-sacramental retreat with parent and child are scheduled each year. Interviews are held with each student preparing to celebrate a sacrament.
Weekly classes are currently offered on Sunday mornings for students in grades k-5. Students in grades 6-8 attend their choice of two out of three mini course sessions which include a component of several Christian service activities. Grades 6-8 are held on two weekday evenings.
A Pre-Confirmation Preparation program is offered to high school students along with those needing additional faith formation classes before requesting candidacy for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This program is offered weekly.
Due to the constantly growing population of students in Religious Education / Faith Formation, teachers, aides, hall monitors and office help are welcomed and needed in all of the programs. Volunteer meetings are help periodically throughout the year. Volunteers need to have a deep faith, a sense of humor and flexibility. Training for all educators is available. Anyone over 16 years wishing to offer their talents should contact the catechetical leaders listed under Parish Staff in the front of this booklet.
- YOUTH MINISTRY
Saints Peter and Paul faith community recognized that ministry to youth must be an integrated process involving all facets of life including faith formation, community, catechesis, personal development and service. Youth Ministry works to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person and to draw young people to responsible participation I the life, mission, and work of the faith community. Youth Ministry empowers young people to become disciples of Jesus Christ who witness to their faith by living and working for justice peace and human dignity.
A Youth Ministry Planning Team composed of adults, pastoral staff and youth meet regularly to plan, implement and evaluate our Youth Ministry Program, which focuses on high school student's ages 13-18 years old. All are welcome to join in activities, events and programs. Youth Ministry also incorporates a family perspective in all youth ministry programming by developing specific programs for parents, for youth and parents together and for the whole family.

PASTORAL CARE/SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
- PASTORAL VISITS TO THE SICK: The pastor, deacons and lay pastoral associate are pleased to visit the ill and handicapped members of our parish in hospitals, nursing homes or in their own homes. Nowadays many hospitals and nursing homes do not inform us when a parishioner is admitted. Anyone in our parish family who anticipates hospitalization for any length of time, moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home or who becomes homebound in their own home, should notify the parish office.
- BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY: The death of a loved one is an especially difficult time. The purpose of the Bereavement Ministry is to offer services to the family to help them through the initial period following their loss. Anyone wishing to share their time to perform specific tasks of assistance is welcome to join in this ministry. There is no minimum time commitment to this ministry and any time you can offer is gratefully appreciated.
BEREAVEMENT MINISTERS SERVE IN ONE OF TWO CAPACITIES:
Funeral Ministers work in teams with each team assigned to a particular day of the week. The individual's experience as lector or eucharistic minister may determine whether they help the family prepare the funeral liturgy, assist the priest in preparing and serving at the altar, proclaim the readings or service communion at the funeral liturgy.
Bereavement Callers recognize that grief can be a lengthy process. About two months after a funeral has taken place, bereavement callers telephone the parishioner who was next of kin or responsible for planning the funeral liturgy. These specially trained ministers offer ongoing consolation and listening support. They can also suggest and accompany the bereaved to support group meetings and offer advice as to more extensive grief support services if needed.
- MINISTRY OF PRAISE: The Ministry of Praise is a spiritual ministry. Members offer joys and sufferings I prayer to God for the spiritual and physical needs of others, particularly for those of our Faith Community> All members of SS Peter and Paul's Parish can become members of the Ministry of Praise, through membership is specifically directed towards the elderly, the homebound or handicapped and those who cannot participate actively in other ministries.
Members are requested to join with others in prayer on a daily basis. A monthly letter is sent to each member advising them of several prayer needs for that month. There are no meetings to attend or dues to be paid. Members of this ministry are formally welcomed and commissioned by a member of the Pastoral Staff. At that time they receive a cross, a book of suggested prayers and a certificate of membership.
- SAINTS PETER & PAUL PRAYER LINE: The Prayer Line is comprised of a group of persons who are willing to offer prayers for those in need. Prayers are offered for reasons of physical of mental health, economic relief, obtaining employment, etc. All requests and circumstances are kept confidential. Parties requesting prayer are not required to reveal their names or the specific details surrounding their request for prayer. They simply call the number listed in the bulletin to request prayer or call the parish office.
Anyone devoted to prayer and healing may join the Prayer Line if they are willing to pray daily for those who request prayers and can maintain confidentiality. There are no meetings or dues. The only commitment is to be willing to pass the prayer request on to the next person on the prayer line.
- SMALL FAITH COMMUNITIES: In the last century, more than 100,000 small Christian communities have come into being throughout the world. In the United States, these groups take the form of scripture study groups, prayer groups, support groups or ministerial communities. In a parish as large as Saints Peter and Paul, the Small Faith Community provides a means for Catholics to enhance their spiritual lives and to live the mission of Christ more fully through communion with other Catholics. All of our parishioners are asked to consider what it means to be holy and encouraged to become part of a group of people striving to live their lives according to the spirit of Christ.
Most small faith communities consist of 10 to 12 parishioners who meet once a month in their homes or in the parish. Together they pray, read and reflect on the scripture readings for the following Sunday or use topical materials designed for small groups. Discussion and discernment of God's Word is facilitated by a group leader who focuses on the challenge and call to live out the gospel reading I our daily human experience. Facilitators of these groups are trained and may meet periodically with a pastoral staff member for continuing spiritual growth.
Anyone interested in becoming part of an existing small faith group, starting a new group or acting as facilitator or host for a group is invited to call the Pastoral Associate at the Parish Office.
- TEAMS OF OUR LADY: This international movement for married couples offers a way for couples already involved in strong, sacramental marriages to grow together in live and holiness with the shared support of other couples. Similar in structure to a small faith community, the "team" which consists of 4-7 couples and a Catholic priest, meets monthly to share a meal and their faith using materials that focus on married spirituality. Over time, team couples create a Christ-centered community of friends willing to share their joys and sorrows in complete trust and help each other intrude concern. Teams of Our Lady provides another way of being a small faith community for many couples at Saints Peter and Paul. For Further information, contact the Parish Office.
- CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER: "Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46
Contemplative prayer is the regular practice of reflection and then resting in the presence of God. Unlike meditation, contemplation is not a method of prayer to be chosen at will, but a gift into which one is drawn. One evening group and one morning prayer group meet weekly at Saints Peter and Paul Church. New groups can be formed to meet your needs.

CONSULTATIVE BODIES
- PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL: The Parish Pastoral Council is an advisory group of parishioners whose primary function is that of liaison between the parishioners of SS. Peter and Paul Faith Community and the pastoral staff. Acting under the guidelines and within the perspectives of Vatican II, the Parish Council participates in mutual discussion towards the advancement and achievement of apostolic, social and administrative work in the parish community.
Council members are either appointed by the pastor, or elected. Elected members receive their position through an election by the parishioners. Nomination is open to any adult member of the parish. Notice of nominations and elections are published in the Parish Bulletin. The term in office is 3 years; however, a council member may be elected for one additional 3 year term. Council members are expected to attend regularly scheduled council meetings and to actively participate on various committees.
The Parish Council normally meets on the fourth Monday of every month, at 7:30 PM. Notices of meetings are listed in the Parish Bulletin and are open to all members of the Parish. If a parishioner wishes to attend a meeting, specifically for the purposes of bringing a matter to the attention of the Parish Council, we ask that they notify the Parish Council President one week in advance so that the matter can be included on the agenda. This is to insure that the matter is heard.
One way the parish council takes an active role in carrying out its ministry to the parish is through its standing committees. Membership on the committees is open to all members of the parish.
Buildings and Grounds Committee: This committee attends to the physical plant of the parish. Members advise and make recommendations to the Council regarding areas of maintenance of the buildings, parking lots, grounds, and cemeteries. They are also responsible for reviewing the Insurance Loss Prevention Report and delineating plans to implement the recommendations contained in the report. Buildings and Grounds meets four times a year and on an as-needed basis as determined by the Pastor.
Education Advisory Council: This council (formerly School Board) functions within its Constitution and by-laws in conformity with the policies set forth by the Diocese of Buffalo and the Pastor. The Parish Council membership acts in consultation with the Education Advisory Council and the Pastor to promote the philosophy and goals of the school. Through this forum, Parish Council aids the school in carrying out the policies which are centered in the person and gospel of Jesus Christ as well as the allocation of parish resources needed to achieve those goals.
Parish Finance Committee: This committee assists the Pastor by advising in matters of income and expenditure of funds, and in providing for an efficient, accurate system of reporting, recording and accounting. The Finance Committee also reviews and monitors the parish's capital expenditures. Parishioners from the legal, business and financial professions are especially helpful on this committee and are appointed by the Pastor. While this committee is mandated by Canon Law and is therefore a stand-alone committee, it still submits a report to Parish Council for information and discussion.
Liturgy Committee: This committee educates the parish on historical grounds and current changes in the Liturgy. It works with the RCIA in planning all aspects of liturgical life. Projects may include study of the rites and scripture, preparation of Communal Reconciliation services, joint services with other churches or special Liturgies of the Word. Training of volunteers for ministries of lector, Eucharistic minister, funerals and the preparation of prayers of the faithful are provided by this committee. We are a community of believers who are grateful for our diversity and mindful of our unity in Christ. Our lives are based on faith, hope and charity through the outpouring of the Spirit, nourished by the Eucharist.
Our mission is to be communicators of God's grace and Christ's message to help people achieve salvation. We seek to build a Faith Community by enriching ourselves through Word and Sacrament. Our aim is to share our faith by teaching, personal witness, and works of charity.
Because we see in all people the image of God, we seek to relieve their physical, spiritual and emotional needs by involving all age groups within our parish.
